Character Analysis of Mark Antony in Julius Caesar

Mark Antony is for me one of the most unforgettable characters of William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar. While he begins as a loyal companion to Caesar, the role that he serves fulfills far beyond his role as Caesar’s companion as the story continues. He is courageous, he is sharp and he is charged with emotions. When Caesar dies, the character of Antony changes in a dramatic way, which greatly contributes to the direction taken by the play. He demonstrates that he is so much more than just a follower he becomes a leader, a master speaker, and a shrewd strategist. His actions elicit the emotional depth and political turns that make the play bombastic and so intense.

Loyalty, Strategy, and Transformation

The “ Character Analysis of Mark Antony in Julius Caesar ” shows how strong loyalty to Caesar is responsible for his many decisions. Even near the killers of Caesar, he remains cool and requests permission to speak at Caesar’s funeral. Not just a moment of emotion… it is the beginning of a plan. Antony beats his anger and sorrow with words of gentle nature but deep down he is all set to hit back. His funeral speech is the best speech when it comes to smart and emotional speaking in the entire play. Slowly, he turns it the people against the conspirators using the help of Caesar’s will and memories which move in their hearts.

Following this speech, we are shown another side of him. The Character Analysis of Mark Antony in Julius Caesar, also demonstrates how he gets more political and calculating as well. He creates new alliances, brutal orders, and begins to think like a ruler, not like a friend. This change testifies that Antony is not only loyal, but he is also willing to lead and win. That he was able to transform from a mourning friend to a high-level potentate is, in fact, what makes him such a complex and dynamic character in the play.
